You are absolutely right a 12 pt hex/ or torx will work wonders. 
 Something else I discovered after fighting with a corroded water pump bolt 
on an old ford van. That even  after it had broken off leaving only a little 
stub when w.pump was removed, I beat a super tight socket over the rusty stub 
and surprisingly it came out. 
In fact the piece of bolt still is stuck in that socket to this day. Note: A 
screw extracter would not work,only kept breaking of pieces of bolt making me 
sweat even harder. Ofcourse now everything is metric and hex due to the 4 vws 
in my yard.
