The starter is behind the block, below the exhaust manifold and above the right drive shaft. I use a:
13 mm socket ro remove the left ball joint. CV triple square tool for the inner right CV to tranny connection, then drop the inner CV 8 and 10mm sockets to remove the factory heat shield (if its not there, get one ASAP) 13mm socket with several extensions to remove the 12V cable and the starter itself If you wanna do your friend a favor, put in a starter relay while you are in there. Also consider running heavy guage cable from the battery, through the relay to the starter. I used 6AWG, but 8 is likely enough. Email me if you need a wiring diagram. The path that need less resistance and a relay is the one to the switched terminal (50?). Why do you wanna do this you ask: If you don't you will likely suffer the A2 auto hot start problem. If you drive the car for more than an hour, it will need to cool for at least half an hour before the starter will work. When temperature goes up, the switching threshold for the starter solenoid does too, but the resistance of the cables to it goes up with temperature too. It needs more voltage but gets less. I just tested mine after these mods. After 6 hours from LA to Phoenix in 100F+ conditions, I parked at the hotel and shut of the engine. I turned the key clockwise agian and it fired immediately. You'll want a jack and some jack stands though, because it will be tough to get in there. _____________ List Sponsor: http://www.netsville.com To remove yourself from this list, send mail to [email protected] with 'unsubscribe a2_16v' in the body of your message See us on the web at http://www.a2-16v.com Visit the 16V Homepage at http://www.gti16v.org
