As you all remember I had said I lined up the marks on intermediate shaft and
crank pulley together and the cam sprocket to the edge of head as specified.
The result was my 8v jetta ran very badly. This morning after work I again set
the crank at TDC, disregarded the mark on the intermediate sprocket and just
lined rotor to number 1 position, and moved cam to specified position on the
edge of head. The result was it seems to be running well. How did the mark on
the intermediate shaft get so far out of whack? Could this be from someone
removing the distributor and reinserting incorrectly in the past?
 Thanks guys for your help
             Mike
