I had similar problems on my 92 Passat 16V automatic. In addition to the broken and worn mounts, I would also have to replace the broken exhaust hangers every three months. I found that in my case, worn mounts at the tranny and the rear would place more stress on the new front mount. I had to replace all three and all of the exhaust hangers ($15 each x 3) at the same time. That seemed to stem off any more problems for at awhile and properly align the drivetrain. (Assuming there are no additional broken brackets or hanger points that are causing your problems)
I know that's not totally encouraging but it's still better than replacing front mount every two months. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, October 28, 2002 12:03 AM To: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: [a2-16v-list] Son of a bi%#@ Another blown motor mount!?! I blew my '91 Passat's second replacement front motor mount on Friday. Both were Beck/Arnley and lasted only 2 months. Both times it happened during normal driving while leaving the neighborhood. There was no high rev, dump the clutch, squeal the tires action as one would assume necessary to cause such a violent reaction. I know other people have had this problem. Does anyone have some advice or know of any performance mounts? I know the B4 mount is in the same place but is it designed differently? I'm plan to put on a cable to limit the engine travel to prevent this from happening again. Long Story: I was stuck in high traffic out on the inside lane of the 4 lane road I turned onto. I got a someone to help me push it out of the road after waiting a few minutes before traffic allowed us to do so. The distributor cap was knocked loose but it didn't look like any thing was broken, other than the mount and the alternator belt being knocked loose. I decided to drive it home but only made it about 20 ft and coasted into an old parking lot. The tab on the inside of the rotor broke. I bought a GP Sornsen rotor which looked cheap and didn't fit. I got a Beck/Arnley one Saturday and tightened up the alternator belt (which was pretty chewed up). I drove it home with no problems. I tested it out later and there was a klunk from the motor lifting(?) when starting out and downward one when coming to a stop. I drove back home and left it until some friends came to look at it today. The alt. belt broke and the distributor cap was knocked loose again. The rotor had been grinding into the cap and the contact broke off but the car managed to stay running yesterday! I'm going to get a new belt, cap and rotor and go from there. I don't plan on just buying another replacement mount.
