There is a way to remove the AC and put the alternator where the AC once was
with you only buying a new belt and a turnbuckle. Total cost: <$10. Do a
search on the 16V archive and you should find it.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] AC Removal

All,
Is there a way to remove the A/C on an '85 16v that doesn't involve
getting a new
alternator bracket for the car? My A/C doesn't work, and its just tying up
engine
space.
Also, there's a blade-type connector on the intake manifold that doesn't
seem to
have anything connected to it. What's this do?
