I don't know what a turnbuckle is, but here is another, low cost, method.

I did this on a 16V, though.  I would imagine it would be the same, though.

You can keep the alt. in the STOCK mounting position after removing the a/c
by extending the alt. pulley so it lines up w/where the belt coming off the
crank, water pump, and (now absent a/c) is.  To do this, I used VW part #
049-903-119-L (~$20, dealer only).  This is the pulley they put on non-a/c
16V alt to achieve the afor mentioned alignment of the alt. pulley.

Once the pulley is on the alt. and the alt. is back in the stock mounting
location it will be obvious u need one hella long belt to reach up to the
alt.  Like I said above, this belt will go over the crank, water pump, and
now go up to the alt.  It is on the inside, so if you have PS, u'll need to
remove that belt to put this one on.  After 3 trips to the parts store, I
found Dayco belt 15440 (11A1120) (~ $8) works well for me.
