Mark,

Why step 1.1, since it's not necessary to remove the half shafts from the
wheel bearing hub to get the transmission out?

Missed a few things....

Here is my experience taking out the transmission.
1. Remove all associated wiring and shift linkage connections, spedo cable,
etc.
1.1 Loosen 30mm nut on hub (it would be impossible & dangerous to do it with
car jacked up)

2. Jack car way, way up and install jack stands and support engine with
floor jack.
2.1 Index and remove bolts securing ball joints to control arms (otherwise
it will be extreemly difficult to get axles out)

3. Take drive shafts off of transmission and tie up.
4. Take starter and all other bolts off (Don't forget about the one on the
back side or that tin shield bolts.. Been there, done that)

5. Take the shift linkage mounting bracket off the transmission.
5.1 Loosen bolts that hold the tranny mount to the tranny, (it may be hard
to spot, because it doesn't look like it should come off)

6. Get under the transmission, push up on transmission, twist towards
firewall, swear, and hopefully slide off.

Installation is reverse, just more swearing.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] transmission questions...

Someone once posted a great step-by-step for A2 transmission removal on
the list. Does anyone still have it?

My '85 8v GTI w/ Audi 2.0l block has a really bad 2nd gear syncho and
the clutch is scarilly stiff and starting to slip for some reason. I've
gone through and replaced the cable and its still really bad. Until
both issues are fixed, I don't really feel like taking the car to the
track and running it hard. So, I was thinking of swapping in a used
tranny and a new clutch kit sometime in the next week or two while I'm
inbetween jobs. I guess my question is this:

What transmissions will fit? Currently it's running around with a 16v
scirocco transmission. What are the differences between 16v and 8v
transmissions, old and new, etc? Output shafts and clutches were
different, correct? While I'm there I've got a bad CV joint so I'll
probably rebuild most of that stuff...do wheel bearings, CV/axles,
clutch and transmission. Might as well. I have time to kill and it's
going to see _A LOT_ of miles this fall.
