Go purchase the CV joint kits and do it yourself. The only other alternative
is to purchase an entirely new axle shaft.

My reluctance to purchase rebuilt units is because you do not know the
quality of the original core or the standards used by the rebuilder. Often
times, the cores are returned in sad shape and are only cleaned and
regreased then covered in a new boot and sold as "REBUILT". My experience is
that I've had to repeat the process after only a short time and I've often
been misguided because the rebuilt boots are still in good working
condition. The actual CV joint was still a high mileage unit that had only
been cleaned and restuffed with grease.

Only way to avoid this situation is to purchase new CV kits and do the work
yourself or have a mechanic that you trust perform the work.

Just my opinion

Subject: [a2-16v-list] CV boot problem

As I was checking my front right tire pressure tonight I noticed black
grease on the wheel. You know what that means, I get underneath and find a
pinhole size leak in one of the joints of the outer CV boot. I look, and the
inner boot doesn't appear to be in that great of shape. So I could buy a
inner and outer boot kit, replace them both. I've done this before, it takes
a fair amount of time, and is very messy. Or buy a new/rebuilt axle and just
bolt it on. The axle on the car is original AFAIK. I guess I know my
options, I'm just wanting someone to tell me to buy the axle so I don't have
to do the rebuild. I'm afraid my duct tape patch won't hold for long.
