There is one o-ring you will want to replace after removing the oil cooler.
Wouldn't hurt to do as Preventative maintenance either.

Mine was hard as plastic when it cracked unexpectedly one morning and dumped
4 quarts on the driveway before I noticed it. Luckily I was just warming the
engine in the morning and I never lost oil pressure. A few more seconds, or
if I were on the road when it happened, I would have lost the engine for
sure.

It's funny, I replace suspension bushings, injector o-rings, plug wires etc.
etc. trying to make the car run and drive like new....and here was a simple
to replace $1 part that almost cost me an engine.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] oil cooler leak

I was trying to track down what I thought was Yet Another valve cover
gasket leak today, but it seemed most of the oil was around the oil
filter area. The filter itself isn't leaking (that I can tell), so I'm
thinking it's probably the oil/coolant heat exchanger that the filter
attaches to.

Anyone fixed a leak in this area? What new seals will I need before
tearing into it?

Laters,
Brian
