I recently acquired an '86 Jetta GLI 8v to replace my Rabbit diesel
which become my Dad's runabout after I built the 2.0L Slorcco 16v for
the 2002 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge. Everything had been
working well (OK, as well as expected for a 23 yr old VW) when a
young lady rear-ended him while he was stopped for a school bus -
DOH!!

I tapped some of my local VW resources and located this Jetta fairly
quickly and at a good price. The specifics are: 131K miles, full
power and cruise - most of the windows even function!, lowered with
Tokicos, TT exhaust. The only downsides to the car are that it needs
a windshield and it has the obligatory dent underneath the trunk lid.
It didn't come with wheels so I dug out my ancient Fitipaldi
Monolithics (15x7) and pressed them back into street use. Aside from
giving it a thorough cleaning, I figure I'll have it painted since
the horizontal surfaces are getting a bit "fuzzy" with age. Once
it's done, my 77 yr old father will be driving a "pimp" car yet again
- somehow he just didn't look right driving a bright yellow Rabbit
diesel <G>.

The good news is that the insurance company provided a rental car AND
paid handsomely for the Rabbit. The real shame is that the Rabbit
was a great little car that I effectively rebuilt from the ground up
- Golf 5-spd trans, new suspension, axles, motor mounts and so forth
(yes, I know, it's JUST a Rabbit but it's a sickness with me). While
I'll miss the Rabbit, I'm glad to have another A2 - IMHO they're a
huge step up from the A1 and I have a plethora of spares from the
General Li.
