Thanks Holland. The passat auto tb has a tps already and its what almost everybody recommends using with with standalone systems on a 16v vw. I think it would have been easy to add a tps to my stock 16v throttle body, but it saved me some time and didn't cost too much either.
I'm using both stock pumps - they are triggered directly by megasquirt using the stock vw relays. There are two 6 pin connectors (gray + black) near the motronic computer. I used 3 of the 12 wires to handle the tachometer, fuel pump trigger, and switched 12v source. I think most people running a 16v without boost are using 20 - 25 lb/hr injectors. I am running fuel pressure 43-44 psi for fuel pressure and injecting fuel in larger less frequent squirts which is an option in megasquirt. The engine is idling and running pretty well considering I haven't tuned very much yet so I may just keep these injectors in there. Otherwise I will end up getting smaller injectors so the idle and cruise fuel mixture can be as accurate as possible. I live in Florida and there is no inspection in my county anymore. egr is exhaust gas recirculation - I don't think my 16v has anything like that (of course i could be wrong here), but it has emissions related thinks such as : - crankcase breather hose connected to intake before throttle body. I've simply put a crankcase breather filter on there for now because I didn't want to spend the time putting a hose fitting on the intake tube. I will likely do that soon just so it works as vw designed it. - manfold vacuum from a port on the throttle body was connected to a vent line coming from the gas tank, passing through the charcoal filter. There were two valves that controlled the vacuum on this vent line. Since the motronic computer controlled these I just got rid of them. I don't know yet exactly the best way to take care of the vent from the gas tank but I think most just put a filter on there to keep dirt and bugs from getting in there. I've asked around on vortex but the answers don't seem like 100% correct solutions. I don't understand exactly how the charcoal fuel vent system is supposed to work so I can't rig up something yet. Maybe someone on here can advise on what could be done. Its kinda cool to be able to connect a laptop to your car for seeing what is going on, tuning, logging data, etc. Too bad you live in California :) Chad On 12/3/06, Holland Phillips <[email protected]> wrote:
Chad, Looking good, dude! Got a few questions for ya: Why the Passat slush box T.B.? Does it have a "real" TPS, or something? What kind of fuel pressure are you running? Are you running just the factory main and transfer pumps? You say the 42 lb. injectors are over 2x to big. How are you compensating for this, running low fuel pressure, or conservative injector duty cycle? It appears that your car is a California model (only CA cars had EGR). If you live in CA, how are you planning on dealing with smog tests? I'm sure that if your car's engine is in decent shape it would pass tail pipe tests, but in CA, they are positively draconian when it comes to the hardware inspection. I recently was cited for not having the upper cover on the timing belt! --Holland [email protected]
