I am in NJ and got my 87 gti registered with historic plates in spring of
2013. Free registration, no inspections, and makes you eligible for
historic insurance. I pay 145$ a year for insurance, provided my use of
the car is occasional to keep it running and in good shape, and not used as
a daily driver.

I did mine in person at the dmv. I brought the two pics....and they
seriously went to google on the computer in front of me and searched 1987
vw gti, and then compared my pics to what they saw. My round headlights
and jetta gli bbs wheels were no problem...so many of the pics they pulled
up on google had modifications anyway, so they couldn't tell the
difference.

I am happy I did it. I don't often drive the car anymore, but I enjoy it
when I do. I was tired of paying insurance for it, and worrying about if
it would pass emissions inspections. The classic plates are almost too
good to be true.

The other bonus....in NJ, where a front license plate is required by law,
collectors/antique/history vehicles don't need a plate. The statute is
* 39:3-27.4 *(Google it for the full text...I carry a printout in the car
with me, in case I get pulled over by a cop who has no clue).

Hope this helps, good luck!
