That's what I used to do. At some point, I acquired an assortment of the
various types of individual contacts for the electrical connectors on my
'92. I had the proper extraction tools for the various types as well. The
connectors which VW used on the Mk1& 2 cars were really problematic. With
the advent of OBD in the US, they had to improve all that.
As far as your charging issue goes, Chad may have hit your problem. The
voltage regulator is mounted on the rear of alternator, and has a set of
brushes which ride against a commutator, much as in a electric motor. Those
brushes wear over time, causing problems. You may still be able to purchase
a relacement regulator at the local auto parts store.
