KBCS is the premium International AI Conference held in India.
Don't miss out on it!

The KBCS series of conferences, held every two years, is intended to
act as a forum for promoting interaction among researchers in the field
of Artificial Intelligence in India and abroad. The schedule includes
a three-day conference on KBCS from Dec 19-21, and one day of tutorials,
on the 18th. Papers are invited on substantial, original and unpublished
research on all aspects of Artificial Intelligence, including, but not
   limited to those given below.

This year, ICON-2002, International Conference on Natural Language
Processing, will be held concurrently with KBCS-2002. Authors may,
therefore, choose to submit papers focusing on Natural Language
Processing (NLP) to ICON-2002. KBCS-2002 will also consider NLP papers
provided they have substantial AI content. The programme committee may
shift some papers between these two conferences based on content and
   suitability.

Computational Synthesis: From Basic Building Blocks to High Level Functionality

To be held at Stanford University on March 24-27, 2003
as part of the 2003 AAAI Spring Symposium Series

Visit http://www.mae.cornell.edu/ccsl/conf/
PDF version http://www.mae.cornell.edu/ccsl/conf/poster.pdf

Computational Synthesis research seeks formal algorithmic procedures
that combine low-level building blocks or features to achieve given
arbitrary high-level functionality. The main challenge is scaling to
high complexities, and the paths of investigation deal with automatic
composition of building blocks into useful modules, automatic
abstraction of module functionality, and automatic hierarchical reuse
of modules. The symposium will focus on domain-independent methods
that address modularity, regularity, hierarchy and abstraction in
automatic synthesis. Recently there has been a surge of interest in
these fundamental issues from three directions: AI researchers
interested in scaling discovery processes, engineers interested in
fully automated design, and biologists interested in the origin of
complexity.

Interested applicants should send a 2-page abstract (in PDF) to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] by October 4, 2002

SYMPOSIUM FORMAT:
Diversity of problem-domains is encouraged. The symposium seeks to
informally bring together researchers from diverse problem domains to
address universal approaches and common issues in automatic
synthesis. We welcome technical papers describing proposed or
completed research activities; position papers outlining a research
agenda or evaluating current ideas and approaches; or suggestions for
panel discussions. Particularly welcome are contributions that
suggest a generic and domain independent approach, although they might
be demonstrated for a particular problem domain. Typical presentations
will be short (10 minutes) with most of the time allocated for
discussion led by a designated peer. Abstracts will be circulated by
mail prior to meeting.

Advances in information technology and data collection methods have
led to the availability of large data sets in commercial enterprises
and in a wide variety of scientific and engineering disciplines. We
have an unprecedented opportunity to analyze this data and extract
intelligent and useful information from it. The field of data mining
draws upon extensive work in areas such as statistics, machine
learning, pattern recognition, databases, and high performance
computing to discover interesting and previously unknown information
in data.

This conference will provide a forum for the presentation of recent
results in data mining, including applications, algorithms, software,
and systems. There will be peer reviewed, contributed papers as well
as invited talks, tutorials and a panel. Best paper awards will be
given for papers in different categories. Proceedings of the
conference will be available both online at the SIAM Web site and in
hard copy form. In addition, several workshops on topics of current
interest will be held on the final day of the conference.

Prize winner Dr. Lee Hartwell. The department will welcome a new
chair, Dr. Bob Waterston, in January 2003.

The University of Washington is consistently ranked as one of the top
research universities in the country and has more than 25,000
undergraduates and 9,000 others enrolled in its professional and
graduate programs. Seattle is considered one of the nation's most
beautiful and livable cities, boasting an array of cultural
activities, parks, sports teams and restaurants, and serving as the
gateway to National Parks and Forests, as well as boating, skiing and

University Research Positions
The Robert Gordon University
Aberdeen, Scotland, UK

The University has 20 research positions (fellowships, senior
fellowships and professorships) available which will enable the
recipients to develop and undertake personal programmes of research,
subject to meeting University and School strategic objectives.

A new, 1.5 million pounds, purpose-designed Computing Technologies
Research Centre is currently under construction, and will provide a
superb computing research environment, incorporating the latest
innovations in technology. The newly established SmartWeb Technology
Centre (www.scms.rgu.ac.uk/smartweb) will be located within the
Centre.

The School of Computing has recently re-organised its research into
groups as follows:
   o Knowledge-based Systems
o Computational Intelligence (including Machine Learning)
   o Information Retrieval and Interaction
   o Graphics and Image Processing
   o Mathematics for Computing

Information on the School's research can be found at:
http://www.scms.rgu.ac.uk/research.

The Knowledge Based Systems group is an established research strength
whose focus is the development of methodologies, technologies and
software tools to facilitate the engineering of knowledge based
systems.  The group's interests encompass: knowledge modelling;
knowledge acquisition, refinement, and maintenance; CBR systems; and
the development of novel intelligent systems technologies for
constraint satisfaction problems, engineering redesign, product
formulation, decision support systems, Web agents, and
bioinformatics. The Computational Intelligence group's work on
symbolic Machine Learning is particularly directed to
Bioinformatics. An important use for these intelligent technologies is
to provide "smart"ness for the novel types of Web-based systems and
services developed by the SmartWeb Technologies Centre.

We would welcome your application for these University Research
Fellowships that provide a huge opportunity to strengthen the already
strong research base of the School, and give an unparalleled
opportunity for the appointees to undertake computing research.

To register an interest please submit to the Human Resources
Department a full academic CV and an executive summary statement of
how your research interests and experience would contribute to the
work of one/more research groups in the School or complement existing
research areas. Please quote reference number RDI-1 in any
correspondence and send it to

Time Series Genetic Programming Software
TSGP

TSGP software is now available free to provide access to a workable GP
computer program. It is user friendly, does not require programming
skills, delivers comprehensible output, and reports desirable
statistics from the stand point of a time series analyst,
statistician, or econometrician. Its introduction should provide some
benefits.

Only the compiled program and instruction on how to use it are made
available here. If you wish to acquire the Koza-type symbolic
regression code (in C), please email Kaboudan.

This is the first release of such software. Comments, suggestions, and
corrections are most welcome.

To obtain a copy of the free software along with instructions, go to:
www.compumetrica.com and click on TSGP Software.
