Call for Papers and Proposals

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INTELLIGENT USER INTERFACES (IUI 2005)

January 9-12, 2005
Catamaran Resort Hotel, San Diego, California, USA

This call is also available via the conference web site:
  http://www.iuiconf.org

WHY SUBMIT TO IUI 2005?

The series of annual conferences on Intelligent User Interfaces is
the principal international forum for the presentation and discussion
of outstanding research and applications involving intelligent user
interfaces. Its proceedings, which are available both as hard copy
and via the ACM Digital Library, are widely read and cited. The central
track of the technical program comprises plenary presentations of
full-length papers, which are selected by the program committee after
in-depth analysis and discussion. A complementary set of short paper
presentations and demos stimulates discussion on work in progress.

TOPICS

Topics of interest for IUI 2005 include all aspects of intelligent
user interfaces. Successful submissions will include aspects of both
intelligence and interface. The programs of previous IUI conferences,
with links to the papers presented, are available via the conference
web site (see http://iuiconf.org/library.html). IUI 2005 encourages
submissions from those who have done relevant work but who have not
previously submitted to an IUI conference. In case of doubt about the
relevance of your work, contact the relevant chair(s) for advice.

LONG AND SHORT PAPERS

LONG PAPER submissions should report on substantial contributions
of lasting value. The maximum length is 8 pages in the two-column
 ACM conference format.

SHORT PAPER submissions typically discuss exciting new work that is
not yet mature enough for a long paper. The maximum length is 3 pages.

Accepted papers from both categories will be included in the
conference proceedings, to be published in hard copy by the ACM Press
and electronically in the ACM Digital Library. Further information,
including detailed instructions about the format and the submission
procedure, will be made available on the conference web site.

Time line for long and short papers:

Monday, 20 September 2004: Submission of manuscripts for review
Monday, 1 November 2004: Notification about acceptance or rejection
Monday, 22 November 2004: Submission of camera-ready accepted papers

WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS

Time line for workshop and tutorial proposal submissions:

Monday, 16 August 2004: Submission of proposal
Monday, 30 August 2004: Notification about acceptance or rejection
Monday, 6 September 2004: Submission of CFP or tutorial description

Further information about the submission of workshop and tutorial
proposals will be made available on the conference web site.

                    C A L L F O R P A P E R S
                   Special Issue of Neural Networks
on Neural Networks and Kernel Methods for Structured Domains
Co-editors: Barbara Hammer, Craig Saunders, Alessandro Sperduti
     (http://www.informatik.uni-osnabrueck.de/barbara/specialNN/)

In recent years several researchers have started to consider the
adaptive processing of structured data. This interest is motivated by
two main reasons:

i) several very important computational problems in Bioinformatics,
Chemistry, and document classification and filtering require the use
of some machine learning procedure to be properly treated because
their complexity does not allow a formal and precise definition of the
problem and thus no algorithmic solution to the problem is known; on
the other hand experimental data is available and usable by a machine
learning approach;

ii) in many of the above problems, the objects of interest are more
naturally represented via varying-size structured representations, such
as sequences, strings, trees, directed or undirected graphs. Moreover,
it is commonly believed that any computational process representing
these objects via flat fixed-size vectorial representations, risks to
discard structural information relevant for solving the task at hand.

The aim of the special issue is to bring together recent works developed
mainly into the fields of recurrent and recursive neural networks,
and kernel methods, with the hope to function as a conceptual support
for the improvement of current technologies and the growth of new
integrated methodologies for learning in structured domains.

TOPICS: Recurrent and recursive neural networks, Self-organizing maps
for structures, Support vector machines and kernel methods for
structured domains, Fisher kernels, Probabilistic models for
structured domains, Applications of the above methods to structured
domains, other relevant topics.

Call for Papers

The recognition and management of individual user preferences and
needs plays a key role in the development of usable services and
products. The International User Modeling Conferences represent the
central forum for the discussion and presentation of research and
industry results in the development of personalized systems, as well
as basic research about personalization. In the last 25 years, the
field of user modeling has produced significant new theories and
methods to analyze and model computer users in short and long-term
interactions. Moreover, methods for personalizing human-computer
interaction based on user models have been successfully developed,
applied and evaluated in a number of domains, such as information
filtering, e-commerce, adaptive natural language and adaptive
educational systems. Previous successes in User Modeling research
reflect the cooperation of researchers in different fields, including
artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, education,
cognitive psychology and linguistics. New trends in HCI create new
and interesting challenges for user modeling. While consolidating
results in traditional domains of interest, the User Modeling field
now also addresses problems of personalized interaction in mobile,
ubiquitous and context-aware computing and in user interactions with
embodied, autonomous agents. It also considers adaptation to user
attitudes and affective states. Furthermore, the user modeling
research is being influenced by interdisciplinary fields, such as
customer relationship management, and could benefit from new emerging
technologies for the communication in the Web, such as, for instance,
web services and the semantic web.
