Subject: Research Scientist, Linear Accelerator Laboratory, Paris
The Linear Accelerator Laboratory (LAL) of the CNRS/University of
Paris Sud has an opening of a permanent research scientist position
in the broader area of machine learning and data mining. The
successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Computer Science,
Engineering, or Statistics and a strong publication record in
statistics, machine learning, signal processing, optimization,
or a related area. The candidate will join the Applied Statistics
and Machine Learning (AppStat) group of LAL which was established
recently to work on the data analysis problems posed by large scale
physics experiments and autonomic computing. Beside working on these
applications, the candidate will also be encouraged to continue
developing his/her independent research in his/her research domain.
The position has a strong interdisciplinary flavor: the candidate
will collaborate with experimental physicists of LAL and also
strengthen the ties between the AppStat group and the computer
science and mathematics communities of the University of Paris Sud.
Experience with large data sets and distributed computing environment
will be an asset. Some knowledge of French is a plus, but not required.
A CNRS CR1 position is roughly equivalent to a late assistant/early
associate professorship; it is typically obtained 4-6 years after
the Ph.D. There are no mandatory teaching duties (although it is
possible, even encouraged, to give courses in one of the associated
universities).
The application deadline is January 9, 2008.

From: Alberto Paccanaro <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Postdoctoral Positions in ML and Computational Biology, London
Applications are invited for two postdoctoral positions
at the Department of Computer Science of Royal Holloway,
University of London.
The postdocs will work with Alberto Paccanaro on developing
novel approaches to protein function prediction. Candidates
should have a Ph.D. in a relevant quantitative field
(e.g. Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering), and a
strong background in machine learning. An interest in
graph-based semi-supervised learning methods would be an
asset for these positions.
The successful candidates will have the opportunity to
collaborate with several faculty members in the School
of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway, including:
Laci Bogre, Alessandra Devoto, Peter Bramley, Paul
Fraser, Enrique Lopez and Paul Devlin. The posts are
therefore ideal for someone with a computer science
or math background who is looking to move into
computational biology.
The Department of Computer Science at Royal Holloway
has a leading position in the study of theory and
practice of machine learning and in particular the
development of the Support Vector learning technique and
other kernel-based techniques. The Department is located
on Royal Holloway's pleasant campus (http://www.rhul.ac.uk/),
in Egham, close to London.
The positions are for 3 years, beginning in the Spring
or Summer 2008. The starting salary will be of 33,974
GBP p.a. (about 70,330 USD), with annual increments.
Both positions are funded by the BBSRC, UK.
Applicants should send a CV including a list of publications,
a statement of research interests, and names and contact
information of 3 referees electronically to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If you wish to discuss details of the position, please
contact Alberto Paccanaro at the same address.

UCI MACHINE LEARNING REPOSITORY: NEW WEB SITE AND FEATURES
We are very pleased to announce the launch of a newly revamped
web site for the UCI Machine Learning Repository*,
online at: http://archive.ics.uci.edu/ml/
We have developed a new search portal that allows for faceted
browsing of over 160 different data sets, using criteria such
as data type, attribute type, number of instances, and number
of attributes. The web site allows users to easily find data
sets that satisfy particular criteria, such as "show all data
sets containing only real-valued attributes and rank by number
of instances." In collaboration with Rexa.info, the site now
also provides links to published papers that have cited each
data set.
We are always interested in new data set donations. If you
have a data set that you would like to make available to
the entire machine learning community, please feel free to
donate using our automated web form. We thank all the previous
donors for making this Repository a success.
