Gentlemen (and Ladies of course)
It seems my initial email caused a bit of a commotion!
1. Distros at IT fair - I consider myself an average Linux user trying
to get the most out of a distro. I still encounter numerous problems,
some everyday and some more technical. I started with Linux one year
ago with Mandrake, and only last week was introduced to Fedora (thanks
Dino if you'r reading this!). The key is to make it simple for the
everyday person. Remember most people have been used to getting their
MS machine logging on to MSN, going to MSN gaming zone etc. Whilst I'm
sure there are non MSN replacements for something like the MSN Gaming
zone, most people will be stuck in their habits. Also what about the
everyday issues, example, Cannot send SMS via Go Mobile using Mozilla
(OK Konquerer works fine in Mandrake). Another example is my Internet
banking, I cannot access my HSBC internet banking from my Linux machine
so I end up using my wife's XP machine. Also, drivers for everyday
things like digital cameras, scanners etc. Perhaps us geeks can get
around these problems, but the person in the street will not. And what
about installing things like virus scanners. How will the peerson who
has a problem understanding how to install something on a Windows
machine (click NEXT NEXT NEXT NEXT FINISH) manage on Linux!
2. What to host on the machine. I'm sure we would like to see as many
distros as possible hosted. So let's all make an effort and get as much
disk space as possible. By the way what type of RAM are we after?
3. Essentially... MONEY MONEY MONEY and more MONEY.
4. Will there be beer at the outing?

I totally agree that our best shot at the fair is Mandrake & Fedora.
I would also be inclined in distributing a couple of CDs with
Knoppix to the people really interested. (the credit card sized ones
are awesome too, but cost a bit more).
I had a bad experiance with those little critters, it seems they
cannot be used in 50x speed cdroms
(particularly the rectangular ones) the noises my laptop cd did were
scary! any way we could
just put an iso on the HD and burn one 'fresh' for who shows a keen
interest.
This sounds more of something like:
"CDs friski.... HAJJIN!!!" (bhal tal-hut!!)
Cool!!
I think we should also setup a computer with Windows XP just next to
it to:
1) Compare and contrast the two experiences
2) Show that they can peacefully coexist
3) Prove that you can be productive (for home or office use) using
both systems
On the other hand If we can show that we do not need XP anywhere
near, that also makes a bold
statment
