During our AGM, we discussed whether we should register MLUG as a voluntary
organisation in terms of the Voluntary Organisations Act. Registration is
not compulsory, and there are pros and cons. It would be good to discuss
this in our next monthly meeting, so here are some links if you want to read
up on this.

Note that many of the links are PDFs.

The Act itself:

Some concerns raised by the NGO Legislation Working Group of the Malta
Resource Centre:

and others: http://www.maltatoday.com.mt/2007/01/14/t2.html

Among the concerns about joining are the requirement of audited accounts and
a lawyer/notary as a legal representative, which constitute new recurring
costs, the authority of the government-appointed commissioner to suspend
activities by the organisation, as well as changes to the statute being
required before registration is allowed. On the other hand the new law makes
it more difficult to perform "public collections" or to recieve
EU/government funding unless the organisation is registered.
