No experience with that NAS but just the situation of a funky raid. I have Backuped the whole raid and cleanly shutdown and detached the drives to run Spinrite on the individual drives.to make sure they are ok. IF SR reports nothing or limited block repair then rejoin them. If lots of SR repair replace the drives. If your light still stays out then I would consider it early signs of the death of these drives. On the issue of the NAS I am unsure if you will find something to diagnose. If there is some sort Raid error log and you see lots of errors successfully corrected thenreplace the drive. If not and the light is still out then the problem lies inside the drive. When drives go slightly bad the internal Error Correction system activates and could read the sort if bad sector up to dozens of times before it returns a good result. The drive could inform the OS of the soft error but does the OS do anything with it. In the end read was successful but was longer than it should have been. Does the OS even know.
The so called S.M.A.R.T. drive interface is mostly opaque and easily misinterpreted.Error reporting is only relevant if the drive is under load. Spinrite does have a smart monitorthat is displayable while it is scanning the drive (therefore under load). See these links to interpret the results. https://www.grc.com/sr/smart.htmhttps://www.grc.com/sr/smart-studymode.htm Its a lot of work to diagnose. Good luck with this. let us know if anything comes of it.If you have other questions let me know. I am told ReadyNAS from Netgear is Linux based and can be logged into and administered. Any comments about ReadyNAS or any other recommendations? (I have an external RAID+USB but there is no way to know what is wrong with it - one of the drive leds does not stay lit. But replication seems to work. No diagnostics or administration tool so I have no way to know what is really going on.)
