Some more things that cross my mind: to setup a sync, at the moment you need to start from an *empty* database on the client, and then during the first sync, the client will download the full database from the server. Is this how you did it?
Manually copying over a database from the server to the client, and subsequently doing a sync will not work because the machine ids will be identical. If this is what you did, then at least an issue with the current code is that it should detect this scenario as opposed to stalling...
