There's a tension/question here that I'm not sure has been explicitly raised,
so I'm gonna.
There are sites that we think a user is going to want to click on: the is the
idea of a speed dial, and one of the goals of Top Sites (which is just this but
informed by your browser data). Statistically speaking, for the US that should
be google.com and facebook.com, along with mainstream news and sports like Fox
and ESPN.
Then there are sites that we think a user in "discovery mode" will value: if
they knew where they wanted to go, they'd go right ahead and type it in the URL
bar, so we instead pick sites with a purpose like the BBC's: "to educate,
inform and entertain". Boingboing, TED, Al Jazeera.
There are other nuances and axes too, of course, but I think this is a
significant continental divide: are we hoping to ship a first-run speed dial
that gets users where they want to go with one click, a curated directory of
wonderful things, or a bit of both?
And if it's the curated directory, how will this evolve (into a modern day
Yahoo!?)?
