Hi Pine, I agree with the potential benefits, but my personal opinion is that merging the two apps would require a substantial overhaul of the Commons app, both in terms of UI design as well as codebase. Linking, if appropriate, would be an easier way to achieve the benefits of shared user base, but of course the experience would not be as seamless for users compared to merging.
Regardless, WMF staff would be better placed than I to answer your question, I think. If there is a merge, there will probably be some management/manpower implications, as the Commons app is currently a community-maintained app, whereas merging would probably mean that maintenance/upgrades would fall under the responsibility of the WMF mobile app team?
