He didn't shoot himself through the head, it was a shot that went just
through the side of his neck/face. The fact that Brad Pitt had a bullet
hole in his head was an allusion to the fact that that part of him was
killed. Since he was never real it didn't matter where or how he killed
him, just the fact that he did. He could have shot himself anywhere and it
would have "killed" Tyler in otherwords.

Did anyone else notice all the sneaky things that were thrown into this
movie such as:
The "Seven Years in Tibet" sign?
Brad Pitt's character from the movie "12 Monkeys" in the airport?
The Pixies song!!
