I have Apache_1.3.12/mod_perl1.2.1 running on Solaris 5.5.1 with no probs.. You might want to try other things?? Check that your system is up-to-date with patches?

if you haven't tried already, a newer version of Perl might help, a number
of Perl malloc() bugs have been fixed since 5.004_04
