I agree that Apache Toolbox does a nice job for apache/mod_perl installation -- even goes out and gets the source for you. I would like to mention that I got a great deal of benefit from the INSTALL document from the mod_ssl distribution -- it contains many examples of configuring and compiling common Apache configurations such as Apache+SSL+mod_perl+PHP...etc... It went a long way towards alleviating my confusion when I first started working with Apache.
