I suspect you were just trying to do too much at once on your first try by throwing PHP and SSL in the mix. I suggest you look at SpeedyCGI (http://daemoninc.com/speedycgi/), which offers similar speedups for CGI scripts but does not require you to recompile Apache. It doesn't have the same feature set as mod_perl, but all you wanted to do was speed up your existing CGI scripts anyway. - Perrin
