following from what i said about my school, it's even worse at uni. they ALL
LOOK THE SAME!!!!!! it's scary - they're all doing that skateboardy/surfy
thang, and there are no mods at all!
i grew up near Essex University, and saw around me youth cults all the time,
punks, new wavers, even mods (who graffitteed the railway bridge with 'we
are the mods', so aged 4 i asked my mum what a mod was, and she lived in
Clacton in the 60's, so she knew!). i definitely think the media-driven
thing has something to do with it - people used to look to something
relatively underground like NME or Melody Maker, i spose - hey, or even
fanzines - to find out what bands were around, and all that. but now a lot
of fanzines and music papers just go on about 'over'ground stuff, so that
could be why they all look so the same - they think they're bein
'alternative' because the media tells them they are - they lack the
initiative to realise that actually they're not 'alternative' at all.
