Some points:
Paul "Enoch Powell" Secular loves to stir shit with America. I think in part
it's a schoolyard thing - picking enemies with an eye to who might join you
in ganging up on them. In part it's because he loves to spout off about
things he knows nothing about. In part he's proud of being English because
he has little else to crow about.
As far as Americans connecting with very English culture - while they may
not have the same reference points (Slough, Milkmen, Alan Partridge etc.)
they nevertheless may find their own way to connect - whehter it's through
the universal nature of good music - or through a general fascination with
English culture, not all of which makes immediate sense. And you can't fault
them for that. Unless you also fault the English for being fascinated by
American culture. Sure, "McDonalds and US imperialism yadda yadda" but
no-one forced you to love American film and American records. Or forced you
to be interested in U.S. stuff that means little to an English person (Las
Vegas, Back Door Men, Scorsese, etc.)
Personally I love the cultural exchange - when English have imitated
Americans and vice versae. It's given us great music, great cinema, and some
amusing conversations about men called Randy.
>How different is your average urban white
>kid in America to your urban white kid in England.
A lot, but there is definite common ground. Soulfire and Secular. I rest my
case.
As for the food - look, neither America nor England is exactly top of the
list in my world of food. You can dine well in either place with enough
money, America undoubtedly pips it for good cheap food but the cheese is
shit and the fruit and veg ain't all that.
It's comparing apples and oranges, we've been through it all before and
please would everyone refrain from giving Secular an opportunity to taunt
those not of pure Anglo Saxon stock?
