i am by no means saying that Joseph Conrad was a better writer than George
Elliot, Herman Melville, or William Faulkner simply because English was not
Conrad's first language as opposed to the others you would be hard pressed
to have me admit that Conrad was better than many writers, but that is
beside the point. Simply, those who must utilize English from a peripheral
understanding of Anglo dominated culture must engage the language more
formally, carefully, and effectively than any of us born and breed right
here in the States, or the U.K., or Australia, et cetera.
i shy away from concluding the scenario, you can take it for what it is
worth... the fact remains that most Americans (as I refuse to speak for
cultures that I am not purely, and ladies and gentlemen i am a fucking
American) couldn't tell you the difference between a dependent clause and a
participle of speech. i work in a high school and a more than fair number
kids about to graduate in good standing cannot write me a coherent
paragraph. hell, i've probably made a million mistakes, in this reply, but
they are all mistakes that hamper the essential meaning of it little to
native speakers.
in the future, please be so kind as consider the scope of the discussion
before you fire a nerf gun at me... i've got the whole fucking militia.

forced to decipher our cryptic language -- we've always taken it on faith.
