What did annoy me was the THX effects. Ba-BOOOM!!! They made it very
hard to retain my quite substantial lunch. Oh I remember when one could
visit the cinema and fall comfortably asleep. Alas 'tis no more.

A couple Decent albums reviewed, and a few I'd personally avoid. The writer
has less of the middle-aged white guy spin most jazz critics follow. My own
favorite: the Matt Murphy record.

I think that you could only find LOTR "stupid" if you're an incurable cynic. I love
that there's a movie out now that's not trying to bring you down with cheesy slapstick
("Black Knight", "Not Another Teen Movie") or artsy flicks that lecture us about what
a pile of shit life "really" is ("Happiness", "Breaking the Waves"). If you have an
overabundance of imagination and can even temporarily believe in the reality of
fantasy, LOTR is a great movie. Great characters, too.

Oh dear, maybe it was the stale popcorn, or perhaps it was the couple next
to me in chain mail garments and body oder. You metioned that only those
with 'abundant imaginations' find lord of the rings enjoyable...Well, I
wondered where this 'abundancy' was when relying on every heavy handed
cliche' in the book. Including mystical 'celtic' wisdom, funny lil' people,
a big bad soldier with an astounding resemblence to 'predator' and a warrior
spirit scene that would make Mel Gibson proud. By the way, don't take me so
seriously, I certainly don't:) I think it's great kids movie.

So, Mr. Hawley, we meet again. Same Mod Night, same Mod Channel?

But Peter Jackson + J.R.R. Tolkien = a longstanding dream come true,
Steven. I've seen the manuscripts, I've met the Son of the Man, at
least. Greater than Ralph Bakshi plus Rankin/Bass, at any rate ...

... but I will give you, the music was crap. Perhaps not so crap as
your spelling ...

... but I know you know better, so ... on the other hand, just how much
Hammond B-4 and/or Rickenbacker chime can one fantasy epic endure?
Perhaps that really was a job for John Williams, or, better yet, Jerry
Goldsmith ...

Actually, Steve, I said "OVERabundant"... I was relying on self-effacing humor to
defend LOTR in as non-offensive a way as possible. Get it? I agree with you about
LOTR's fan base (um, nice patchouli, buddy!). But I still thought it rocked.

Ok, I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I really enjoyed it,
despite being stuck at the front far left of the cinema and therefore not
able to concentrate on the screen properly.

Its hard to get a great film out of a book that is already known, and is, a
great classic, but I think that it works. For a start its a big film without
any really clear American accents, which makes a nice change (I can't
forgive Kevin Costner for ruining my impression of what Robin Hood should
sound like). Secondly it was good to see Sean Bean doing what he does best
again, fighting.

I might get some abuse for this, but honest, I'm not saying you're wrong,
just wanted to say something good about it.

Andy

Hobbits feet are to big to be mod. But they love shrooms! Are shrooms
mod right now?

I'd like to play Elijah Wood's B3. He isn't of age yet is he?

uh huh.
