I probably don't know any more than you, judging by your description and what I've done in the past, but I recall some mention about SSL and name-based virtual hosting. I *think* there might be a problem in as far as the SSL protocol actually prevents the support of name-based virtual hosting. I haven't thought this through, so with some consideration my comments may turn out to be obviously true, or obviously wrong! I know that's not a lot of an answer, but it might just help a little!
