I'd seriously consider upgrading your Linux as the very first thing to
do!  If you can find a second machine, I would load a recent Linux on
it, then build Apache and any other stuff you need that is not included
in the distribution you chose.  Test well on the second platform, then
replace your existing machine with the temporary one.

Then you can take the existing machine offline, and upgrade it.


If you don't have any preferance on distributions, I'd suggest SUSE, it
seems quite complete, and has quarterly upgrades for about $30.00 in the
US.  I did an 'almost everything' install, and loaded 2.4GB of various
application programs.  So far Cricket, the web use monitor, is the only
thing I've wanted that is not on one of the 6 CD's that come with each
upgrade of this distribution.  (I build my own Apache, because it is a
critical application, and I want the control, but a perfectly functional
one for normal people is included.)
