Please, can we stay focused in this thread on the generic problem that I'm 
trying to solve? I've used mod_perl as an example, since I have the current 
need in that domain, but the problem is absolutely generic. By turning this 
thread into a mod_perl-specific discussion, you turn away people who aren't 
interested in mod_perl but could have a useful input on the problem in 
question. Thank you for your understanding.

Nick, I hope you don't mind, I'm following up on your post on the modperl dev 
list instead of here, since what you are talking about is interesting, but not 
in this context. All interested parties are welcome to join us there.
