David,

Thank you for your thoughts, I appreciate them.

When our son bought the aftermarket Zenith copy I was a bit apprehensive
because they don't have the best of reputations. They tend to suffer from
distorted mating surfaces that lead to exactly the type of air/fuel leak you
describe. For that reason I opened it up to check the float level and fit of
the O-ring before very carefully putting it back together again and fitting
it. I'm beginning to suspect a wiring fault but I'll not see the Landy now
until the weekend. The plan is to send the original genuine Zenith to be
refurbished so that we will have a quick swap spare. If the problem persists
we may do that sooner than we planned to see what happens.

Best regards,
Lawrence

I'm not so sure about the sticking float theory. Whilst it is true that
Zenith carbs can suffer from this - it doesn't seem to fit your symptoms.
When a float sticks, or the fuel inlet flow is impaired, then fuel enters
the the chamber at a reduced or zero rate. The symptoms (fuel starvation)
occur once the engine has used the available fuel in the chamber. So, if
going around left hand bends was causing the float to stick, the effect
would be seen further down the road. Now, it is possible that if you have a
long straight BEFORE the left hand bend and you have been pushing the Landie
enthusiastically befre going through the gears into the bend, that
starvation symptoms would occur. It wouldn't matter though whether this was
left or right handed. If the float is sticking due to lateral forces - this
may have occurred before said straight.

I've recently had cause to be all too familiar with this problem. I've had
problems with my 87 cvh Weber dft equipped 4/4 coughing and spluttering to
a halt, only to limp home on a very sensitive throttle. I eventually traced
the problem to a sticking primary float (the left one as you look down on
the dft from the offside). Took a complete strip down of the carb and a set
of new gaskets to sort it.

Just one other thought. You say that the Zenith is a new aftermarket carb.
It is possible that you can see exactly the same symptoms as fuel starvation
if there is the slightest of gap between gaskets, allowing the engine to
draw air without first getting an air fuel mix. Again this wouldn't answer
the left hand bend observation - but it's not uncommon when putting on new
carbs to overlook just how important the air seal is.

Best regards

David
