Splendid Quentin, I too prefer the Bentley especially those, few on the
ground these days, with the "proper 6 3/4 litre V8.
I know it, the engine, has been modified out of all recognition over the
years, starting off at 6 1/4 litres for a few years before going up to
the present 6 3/4. Those early engines even had a built up crank, the
main casting with the balance weights bolted on.
From less than 200 bhp on twin SUs through 215 bhp on fuel injection
to the first of the Bentley turbos with 330 bhp, onwards and upwards
from there to 500+bhp.
The turbo Bentley was a great car even with only 330 bhp, although at
the same time Mercedes offered the 600SEL with 410 bhp, faster and
quieter but the Bentley the better driving experience.
Chas..

No, as I understand it VW originally tookover Bentley/RR, but by some
quirk known only to the lawyers BMW had got holdof the brand name, and
VW were able to keep it for only a few years Thus duringtheir control
of both brands VW put Bentley to the fore (previously only 7% ofthe
output had that badge).
The factory just near Goodwood is 100% BMW– and if you need to leave
yours there for service you have a top of therange BM as a loan car –
and will note a strange familiarity with thecontrols & switches – they
are shared.
The VW ‘Bentley’ is – inmy opinion a delight to the eye – the BMW RR is
an offence!

Should have been aBentley not a RR, but it is all down to branding and
money.
