Steve Martin is the ultimate jerk in this hilariously smart "dumb"
comedy from writer/director Carl Reiner. Martin plays Navin Johnson,
a none-too-bright white boy raised by black sharecroppers, who one
day suddenly realizes that he has been adopted. The shocking
revelation sends him off on a journey to find his true identity,
which, as it turns out, is that of a complete idiot. Navin's dumb
luck eventually leads him from rags to riches and back to rags again,
but all the while, he never loses him insane optimism or gains an
ounce of wisdom.
