"In Vietnam the wind doesn't blow it sucks." So says Stanley
Kubrick's hilarious and harrowing 1987 ode to the Vietnam War, a war
film unlike any other, starring Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent
D'Onofrio, and the great character actor R. Lee Ermey as the
psychotic Sgt. Hartman.
Whipping between gritty realism and hallucinatory surrealism,
Kubrick's typically-twisted vision of military life scrutinizes how
ordinary men are turned into killing machines, and the ways in which
war can unearth a man's long lost humanity.
Divided into two distinct segments, the film looks at the effects of
the military mindset and war itself on Vietnam-era Marines. The first
half follows the misadventures of a fresh group of recruits in basic
training under the command of the crazed Sgt. Hartman, leading to a
breakdown of epic proportions involving sensitive cadet Vincent
D'Onofrio. The second half shows another of those recruits, Joker
(Matthew Modine), covering the war as a correspondent for Star and
Stripes and learning first hand that "war is hell."
Brilliant, frightening, grotesque and off-the-wall ... in other
words, Kubrick firing on all cylinders.
