>handheld and fixed unit

Anything aboard an M-15 is likely to get wet (true of any boat, really) so I
would want something submersible. The antenna height is probably more
important than transmitter power, but looking on the West Marine site I
didn't see any handhelds with the option of plugging in an external antenna.
That's a pity because it would be a good solution. But perhaps they all have
that option now (my Standard handheld doesn't). My own preference would be a
handheld, both for convenience and because the best radio of all is the one
you have with you. My handheld gets a lot more use, even aboard Dolphin
which has an ancient fixed-mount VHF.
