I sail a 1978 M17, and have never seen water come through the hole for the CB Pendant. I rarely have water backing through the cockpit drains.
You may want to look at how much stuff you have loaded in the boat. And how balanced you have it loaded....fore and aft. If she is loaded heavy and squatting in the rear...water could back in. That and she would probably be pretty sluggish under sail or motor. I thought Bob was using one way check valves in the cockpit drain lines in the new boats? If not, could they be added?
