Now, describe exactly what a "trucker's hitch" is. Do you mean the rachet adjustable devices with nylon straps? They usually are about 13 feet in length. Actually, all you need is rope or cordage. I use cheap 1/8" polyester braid; 4 or 5 feet is usually enough for this purpose at each fastening point. Fasten one end to the tarp with a bowline. Run the line around some bit of the trailer, etc. Then run it up to a loop made in the line and tie it off with a half hitch. The advantage is that it doesn't slip, is easy to undo, and gives you a 2 to 1 purchase when pulling it tight. You can even get the loop back out without much effort. It would be difficult to tell you exactly how to make this hitch with words alone. I suggest purchasing "The Complete Sailor" (International Marine) which has a small but very useful section on knots. The rest of the book is a delight. Check it out on Amazon.com. Incidentally, the most recent MAIB issue has some letters with diagrams that illustrate this very useful hitch.
