As with most things sailing...it depends.  If I were racing in the  spinnaker 
fleet I would certainly put one on my mast.  It allows  for much more precise 
triming.  For recreational sailing, I've never  really missed having it.  
Rather than trim as perfectly as possible, when I  singlehand I usually over 
trim.  That way I don't have as much worry about  the sail collapsing.
