I've seen loose footed mains and sails with a shelf in the foot. I  like the 
shelf better. When you want to flatten the sail in higher winds, you  just 
tighten the outhaul. With the shelf, the wind is directed back, but the  loose 
foot lets some of the wind drop out the bottom of the  sail.
