I have used a loose foot on my 22' pearson, I just thought it was inefficient. Later I replaced it w/ a brand new sail and I had the bolt rope, what a difference. But that probably had a lot to do with the sail being new.

I like the shelf better. When you want to flatten the sail in higher winds, you just tighten the outhaul.
