To those of you who know of or might have heard of the windvane on
Audasea, it was built with the direct help of Walt. He and I must have
traded about 100 emails in the process. A selfless individual if I ever
knew one.
His advice to me on sailing was, "go.....don't wait until you have the
time. Do it now". The unsaid part was you may run out of time. He had
started to follow that advice, but it was too late. In the last few
years, his health prevented him from doing much other than helping guys
like me with my project. In a way, I think he eventually got a bit of
satisfaction out of seeing some of us build all those designs he came up
with. I think he had once been a designer of experimental aircraft. He
could come up with designs 10 times faster than I could figure out
reasons why they wouldn't work. In the end, it worked and worked well.
Thanks Walt.

I know some of you have heard of, and some corresponded with, Walt
Murray, who maintained a web page with plans for build-it-yourself
self-steering windvanes.
Today, Jan Alkema, an internet friend of his, announced that Walt
recently passed away of a heart attack. A sad day for sailors
everywhere.
