Rick,

Maybe it has to do with the transducer being designed for an external mount
and you are trying to mount it inside.

I have an external suction cup mount and it works great installed just ahead
of the rudder, right on the center line. There is just enough space between
the hull and rudder.

Subject: M_Boats: Garmin Fishfinder Redux

While I'm in the typing mode I thought I'd try this one more time. As you
might remember, I asked for advise pertaining to installing this fishfinder
a couple of months ago. My problem is that I can't get it to read
consistently. It has a boat shaped transducer that I've tried to attach to
the inside of the hull in six different places using five different silicone

based adhesives and Silly Putty. Nothing works. I returned the unit to
Garmin who replaced it with a new unit, but still I can't get it to work.

So now I'm at the point of thinking maybe I can mount the transducer
someplace outside the hull. The unit does seem to work fine when the
transducer is hung over the side. Has anyone had success mounting a
transducer outside? The mount that comes with it is to mount the transducer

on the transom, but if trim my boat properly, the transom is not in the
water and then there's always the added drag of the transducer while
sailing. I've had thoughts of mounting it on a moveable rod, on the transom

so it could be lifted out of the water or to mount it under the hull hiding
behind the keel, but then there's all the mess of the cabling.

So far I've got about 35 hours into this project (including four trips to
the river). Maybe I should just give up. Someone, tell me to give up.

Thanks,

Rick Langer
