Steve's solution does sound pretty good. I had a Silva Model 85 off of a racing sailboat that was mounted on deck. I reused it and mounted on the sliding hatch on the center line. I am quite happy with it but it reduces the clearance for the mast when the mast is lowered. The mast must be lowered from an elevated mast crutch at the stern.
