Nick,
The original traveler on my M17 was about 6" behind the companionway,
like yours. Big hassle to move if you had anyone else sailing with you,
as you needed to reach past their legs to make adjustments. When I
replaced it with a Harken track and a windward sheeting car I moved it
back another 13". That's not quite as far as the newer boats, but works
out well, giving room in front for your passengers legs, but also leaving
you room to cross the cockpit between the mainsheet and the tiller
without having to raise the tiller out of the way.
