I have been using a wide base butane stove for the last 7 yrs and cook in the cockpit or on the cockpit floor. It works great. It heats water in 1/4 time as the alcohol stoves. IThe draw backs is that the butane turns to a solid around 38 degrees F, the fuel is expensive and can be hard to find.
I just bought a wide base colman 1 burner which will work far better for the late season cruises with frost in the AM. Only drawback I can see is that it takes up more space when it is being used due to the long connector tube to the propane tank. I never (rarely) ever cook in the cabin and never underway.
