the prices listed on this site are those recommended by the distributor, i
found mine for $25 at GI Joe's.
the cartridge prices are anywhere from $1.25 to $3.50. i search for sales
and stock up when i find a good deal.
positives:
* when the cartridge is full to 2/3 filled boil time is fast
* built in 'sparker' for lighting
* can remove the cartridge when the stove is not in use
limitations:
* not gimbled nor has pot holders
* when the cartridge is less that 1/3 full stove output is low
* when the cartridge is full the stove will not 'simmer' ... just to much
heat (i save my 2/3 empty cartridges for simmering applications).
* butane will not function below 38deg
* gas stoves on boats ... if you are not careful you can go BOOM
the stove in its carry case goes easily into the cockpit locker (both lockers
on my M15 are 'cut out' so i have lots of storage). i keep the cartridges in a
small bucket that is placed in the cockpit locker. i use the bucket as if a
cartridge leaks the bucket will fill with the gas before the cabin/bilge (that
is my idea anyhow). better system is to purchase/make a holder that hangs off
the stern so any leaking gas stays outside the boat.
i cook in the cockpit. if in a calm port i'll put the stove on one cockpit
seat and sit on the other. if a sea is up i'll cock on the cockpit floor. i
have been in a few situations where i needed to hold the pan on the stove
because of a rough anchorage -- the stove is not gimbled nor has pot holders.
i would never use this stove when underway.
west marine sells a stove that looks 99% the same for $70 -
KENYON MARINE Express II Portable Stove
i've looked at these and can see no differences besides the shape of the
stove. i have found references to 'pot holders' being availble for this stove,
and 'suction cup' feet. i've never seen these available (and wonder if they
would would on my 'max' as the burner and feet are of the same design as the
kenyon).
