Thanks, Tom and Jane, that's a very comprehensive answer, and confirms my 
suspicion that there are no silver bullets.   Reefing the headsail seems like a 
workable (and probably economical) approach, but roller reefing sure sounds 
attractive if the budget will stand it.   Switching the jib sheet attachment is 
a 
lot easier than actually switching sails.   I don't think my jib has reefing 
cringles, so I guess I'd have to put them in.

Is there any way to "jiffy reef" a headsail?
